With his sister Betty, they managed the family ranch property. After his employment ended at Wind Cave he moved Piedmont. Upon returning to South Dakota, he worked maintenance at Wind Cave National Park including the cave lighting project. After leaving Merillat he worked for the National Park Service at Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument in the maintenance division. Following graduation, he worked on the family ranch with his dad. Rob attended Philip High School, and then he went to gunsmithing school.
